About Ancient Identities

This interdisciplinary project is funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and will run for three years as a collaboration between Durham Archaeology and Anthropology, and the UCL Institute of Archaeology.

The project assesses how the Iron Age, Roman and, via smaller pilots, the early Medieval pasts of England, Scotland and Wales are called upon today, situating this understanding in an international context.

Through this case study, the project team are also documenting the wider values of interacting with the past for different individuals and groups, and framing a debate that looks for ways to connect up the interests of stakeholders and outlines directions for further coordinated research.

To study the use or, indeed, the neglecting of materials, practices and ideas from the past in contemporary times, we have developed a combined approach based on research conducted previously by each of the team members.
